The potting bench that you are about to read about is not fancy, but really functional. It is as well really simple to build & use. Except it doesn’t have any legs! Do not panic, having a legless potting bench is in reality a benefit. I will get to that a tiny later.

The potting bench reported in this report is in reality Congruent to the potting bench that we have been utilising for years in our backyard nursery, & it has dished us well, potting up tens of 1000s of plants. I like it since it is oversized plenty to pot up around ten tiny plants at a time, & it holds a substantial total of soil.

However, since I originally published this article, I designed & constructed a potting bench for home gardeners that you could like better. There are tons of photographs & step by step plans for construction it on this page: /free-potting-bench-plans.htm

On the above page you will as well find a picture of one of my else potting bench designs, an outhouse with a flip out potting bench! It’s unique, that is for sure.

Okay, back to my legless potting bench.

Here’s a brief listing of what you will need to build Mike’s rugged, but functional potting bench.

Tools: A screwdriver, a tiny package wrench or crescent wrench, or whenever you have a 1/4″ drive socket set that is even better. A tape measure, a tiny square, a drill, & a ability saw.

Materials: One enitre sheet (4′ by 8′) of 3/4″ treated plywood. Make sure it is treated so it will last a long time. Untreated plywood does not hold up well at all outdoors.

15 dohickeys (you know, those tiny metal tilt brackets, or niche brackets used to colligate 2 boards conjointly at a right angle.) These metal brackets are bended in a 90 level tilt & have 2 holes drilled in them.

30 bolts with nuts 1-” long, & the accurate sized to fit the tilt brackets you buy.

60 flat washers that fit the bolts.

“Mike’s Legless Potting Bench”
If you use this report you may use the photographs that attend the article, as long as you go away the reference to on the photos.

Notice in the above referenced picture that one finish of the bench is relaxing on the potting dirt pile, & the else on solid blocks. Not having trotters is really an advantage since you may get the potting bench practically closer to your potting dirt pile.

Before you start, draw this out on paper so you recognize precisely what every piece of forrest is supposed to appear like earlier make any cuts. This path you will not make a mistake that will ruin your piece of plywood.

Lay the plywood on a flat surface, like your garage floor. From one finish evaluate in 16″ & draw a course crosswise the sheet of plywood. With your saw, split by this line. The piece that you are slicing off is 16″ by 48″.

Now draw a oblique course crosswise the smaller piece of plywood. (The one you just removed from the sheet.) Cut by this line. You ought today have 2 triangular pieces that evaluate 48″ on one side & 16″ on one side.

These pieces ought be in the anatomy of a right triangle. Now you are going to omit a tiny piece from the pointed finish of the triangular pieces. To do this, evaluate 24″ from the right angle, by the 48″ side & make a mark. Using a tiny square draw a course from this mark crosswise the pointed finish of the plywood. This course ought be at a right tilt to the 48″ side of the board. This course ought only be about 4″ long. Cut by this line, removing the tiny piece from the pointed end. Discard the tiny piece you split off. The piece you have went away ought be 16″ on one end, 24″ on one side, & about 4″ wherever you made the split to omit the pointed end.

The 2 smaller boards you have went away ought be identical. These are the sides for your potting bench.

Now back to the more massive piece of wood. This piece ought today evaluate 80″ by 48″. From the long side evaluate over 16″ & draw a course from one finish to the other. Cut by this line. The piece you are removing ought be 16″ by 80″, going away a piece 32″ by 80″.

These 2 pieces will assist as the bottom & the back of your potting bench. Take the back piece & stand it on edge, on top of the piece that will assist as the bottom of the bench to get an thought of how your potting bench is going to fit together. Make five marks wherever you will climb the tilt brackets that will hold these 2 pieces together. Just space the five brackets by the 2 boards, making sure not to put any too close to the finish so they do not interfere when you install the 2 finish pieces. Just keep the brackets about 1-” from every end.

Note: Once you have the brackets installed & the bolts all tight you could need to split off the ends of the bolts & file them smooth whenever they are sticking out so distant as to be a hazard when you are handling the potting bench.

Once you have all five brackets installed & the back of the potting bench mounted to the bottom, you may then install the 2 side pieces. With the 2 side pieces installed you are today the proud possessor of a legless potting bench. You may install trotters whenever you’d like to, but I like mine without trotters since I may get it practically closer to my pile of potting soil.

What I do is remain one finish of the bench right on the pile of potting soil, & then support the else finish with a watched horse, solid blocks, or milk crates. By putting one finish right on the dirt pile, it is really simple to shovel the dirt onto the bench. Not having trotters as well makes the bench easier to shop & move around.

When I need to use it as a desk for making cuttings, I just put a watched horse below every end.

There you have it. Mike’s notable legless potting bench. It ain’t pretty, but it’s really functional.
